Prison educator's practice of adult education in prison education programmes: A Canadian case study

Abstract

Canada has advocated that education programmes offered in its federal prisons must be based in the principles of adult education. However, research in this area indicates that the implementation of adult education in Canadian federal prison education programmes had generally been overlooked. This paper highlights perceptions of prison educators regarding the practice of adult education in respect of two principles. These are: providing a conductive learning environment and sharing the responsibility for the learning process. Based on these perceptions, the research determines what problems (if any), are experienced by prison educators in their efforts to implement the principles of adult education in one Canadian federal prison
