Abstract

Problems of communication in a global co-operative network are identified in relation to the lack of software support. The question of the context for design decisions in a collaborative design environment is explored. This raises broader issues of design knowledge representations in computer-based environment. For example, how are multiple conflicting and contradictory assumptions to be represented? This paper is directly linked to previous presentations by the first author. Frazer discussed automation in design in 1995 during the conference on Excavating Cybernetics and Systems. He emphasised user participation and consultancy work for the architects Cedric Price and Walter Segal. The users of buildings were directly involved in design via electronic mediation. For Action and Observation in 1997 the Groningen experiment was described. This was an experimental, interactive, predictive, evolving, virtual model of Groningen. The prototype was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of modelling the city to enable the citizens of Groningen to interact and influence the development of their city. The authors have constructed, in Hong Kong, a global virtual design studio embodying the most sophisticated virtual reality equipment combined with video conferencing and shared drawing board software. Members of a research team in the department are developing software for such collaborative environemtns.
