The value of visual field indexes in screening and threshold testing of glaucoma
The value of visual field indexes in differentiating between glaucomatous and normal fields was determined using a masked prospective experimental design. Indexes for threshold fields (Humphrey Field Analyser (San Leandro, CA) and screening fields (Henson CFA3000 (Keeler, Windsor, UK) were calculated for 27 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 20 with ocular hypertension, 20 normotensive glaucoma suspects, and 22 age-matched normal subjects. The mean defect, pattern standard deviation, and corrected pattern standard deviation indexes of the Humphrey Field Analyser correctly identified 93%, 78%, and 78% of patients with POAG, respectively. High correlations were observed between these three indexes (r values, 0.84 – 0.98). The four indexes provided by the screening program of the Henson CFA3000 identified only 48% of patients with POAG. Thus, the indexes from the Humphrey, but not from the screening program of the Henson, can be an effective aid in the detection of glaucoma.
