The suitability of CR-39 and polysulphone for ocular solar ultraviolet (UV) dosimetry

Abstract

Purpose

To investigate the suitability of UV-sensitive polymers poly (allyl diglycol carbonate) (CR-39) and polysulphone (PS), for use as a contact lens dosimeter for ocular surface UV dose assessment.

Methods

CR-39 and PS thin-sheet (n=500) and contact lens (n=30) dosimeters were exposed to unshaded sunlight from 0 to 9 MED in 1 MED steps (1 MED = 1 Minimal Erythemal Dose ≈ 18mJ.cm-2 @ 297nm). Following exposure, CR-39 dosimeters were etched in KOH to reveal UV-induced surface opacities, later quantified by spectrophotometry at 400nm and 720 nm. PS dosimeters were analysed for UV-induced change in absorbance at 330nm. Pilot studies were conducted to evaluate the wearability of a PS and CR-39 contact lenses on a human eye.

Results

Both CR-39 and PS exhibited statistically significant dose-response trends (CR-39: ANOVA F9, 90 ≥ 13.362, p=0.0001; PS: ANOVA F9, 90 = 3650.6, p ≤ 0.0001). However, CR-39 was unable to discern 1 MED variation for less than 7 MED (0 vs. 7 MED: Sheffé F9, 90 ≥ 2.545, p < 0.05), while PS was accurate to 1 MED steps (e.g. 0 to 1 MED, 1 to 2 MED, etc.: Sheffé F9,90 ≥ 6.682, p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Compared to CR-39, PS exhibited a superior dose-response trend for low solar UV dose. A ballasted PS contact lens offers a potentially powerful tool for the assessment of regional ocular UV dose using UV-fluorescence imaging techniques, currently under development.
