Abstract
In this paper I briefly discuss some of the issues raised by my doctoral research, which explored the role of copyright in the development of China's domestic creative industries. I discuss two companies struggling to negotiate China's highly complex legal and commercial environment in a search for profit: Huayi Film and Huayi Music. Finally, I introduce my current research, which focuses on China’s commercial music industry and considers the implications of developments in that market for the music industry in the UK.

Citation countsare sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science citation databases.
These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science generally from 1980 onwards.
Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
