Abstract

The effect of disordered and irregular rib spacing on the vibration response of finite plates is studied in this paper. It is found that general vibration reduction in the pass bands can be achieved by simply imposing a single disorder to a periodic ribbed plate. We further found that irregular rib spacing on the ribbed plate can only localize the group of modes, where the modal response is dominated by coupling of flexural waves in the sub-plates and interfacing beams. Vibration confinement for the other group of modes associated with the coupling of torsional waves at the interfaces requires torsional stiffness irregularity to be imposed on the stiffened beams. Applications of vibration localization in vibration control of ship structures are also illustrated in this study where vibration reduction of a ship hull structure at distance away from the source is achieved by simply moving a few of ring frames away from the periodic locations.
