This paper briefly introduces Music Mobile Media and China: New technologies and social networks as drivers of innovation and growth in China's Music Industry a two-year post-doctoral research project exploring the impact of social networks and user-generated content as drivers of innovation and change in China's commercial music industry. The paper will begin with a general discussion of the project's research context and the role of new technologies in the emergence of new modes of interaction, production and distribution in the commercial music industry globally. It will then discuss developments in China's commercial music industry. Finally, it will conclude by considering some of the theoretical implications of these changes.
