Abstract

Doing qualitative research is often just like the textbooks say, but it is also much more. No matter how well prepared you are, how much you have read, or how experienced you are, there is always at least one thing involved in any research project that works itself out in ways contrary to experience or what the textbooks say. In this chapter I discuss some of the predicaments that I have experienced when undertaking research in the everyday social world of schools. By predicaments I mean the integral and often small parts of research design that are described generally in research textbooks but in the lived world of the research site assume a heightened significance. To this end, I consider explicit experiences of gatekeepers and gatekeeping, the effect of researcher presence in the classroom, and researcher-participant relationships that surpass the conventional. In sharing these experiences, I provide some intimate details of these situations with the aim of assisting others facing similar quandaries. Having said that, quandaries tend to be characterized by raising more questions about complex situations than they can expect to answer. The point then is to begin a conversation in the hope that others will join and the dialogue will grow.
