Mathematical Modeling in the Primary School
English, Lyn D. (2004) Mathematical Modeling in the Primary School. In Putt, Ian, Faragher, Rhonda, & McLean, Mal (Eds.) 27th annual conference of Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia. Changes in society and the workplace necessitate a rethinking of the nature of the mathematical problem-solving experiences we provide our students across the grades. We need to design experiences that develop a broad range of future-oriented mathematical abilities and processes. Mathematical modelling, which has traditionally been reserved for the secondary school, serves as a powerful vehicle for addressing this need. This paper reports on the second year of a three-year longitudinal study where a class of children and their teachers participated in mathematical modelling activities from the 5th grade through to the 7th grade. The paper explores the processes used by small groups of children as they independently constructed their own mathematical models at the end of their 6th grade. Our ever-changing global market is making increased demands for workers.
Impact and interest:
Citation countsare sourced monthly fromand citation databases.
These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.
Citations counts from theindexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
Full-text downloadsdisplays the total number of times this work’s files (e.g., a PDF) have been downloaded from QUT ePrints as well as the number of downloads in the previous 365 days. The count includes downloads for all files if a work has more than one.
