The Essence of Geographical Education: An essential issue to address

Lidstone, John (1997) The Essence of Geographical Education: An essential issue to address. In Haubrich, Hartwig (Ed.) Geography and Education. Lehrstuhl fur Didaktik der Geographie der Universitat Munchen, Munchen, pp. 169-187.

Abstract

For some decades, geography educators have been anxious to emphasise the contributions of their subject to addressing the issues currently regarded as threatening the world. The purpose of this chapter is to raise the possibility that in so doing, we have lost contact with the essence of geography inadvertently contributed to the lowered sense of self efficacy apparent in young people in many parts of the world. The results seems to have led to a perception that much of what geography has to offer the wider realm of education may be achieved by other subject headings such as social studies or environmental education. The chapter draws attention to Johnson’s comments of the essence of geography as a discipline and suggests that students’ interests, the future of geographical education and the promotion of active and informed citizenship may be best served by geography educators both reclaiming and proclaiming the subject’s heartland.

Citation countsare sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
