The International Geophysical Year (IGY, 1957–8) was a ‘scientific Olympics of sorts’, involving 60,000 scientists (including a phalanx of amateurs) from 67 countries in a worldwide enterprise of data collection, analysis and exchange. It had profound impacts upon the geopolitical, legal and conceptual geographies of the Earth and on the production and circulation of global scientific knowledge.
