Bushfires : preparation, resilience and recovery
Pritchard, Francine & Gow, Kathryn M. (2008) Bushfires : preparation, resilience and recovery. In Gow, Kathryn & Paton, Douglas (Eds.) The Phoenix of Natural Disasters : Community Resilience. Nova Science Publishers, New York, pp. 209-233.
The emphasis in this chapter is on bushfires as a representative of hazards/disasters affecting communities/regions due to the total loss category of major bushfire events in the past decade (Blue Mountains 2001 ; Canberra 2003 ; lesser known regions in South East Queensland 2002-2005; Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, 2006/2007). It is also the natural disaster that people fear the most; no-one wants to be burned to death, or perhaps worse still to be scarred for life. The need for more research to be conducted, in the area of preparation for natural disasters in general and bushfires in particular, is emphasised through the chapter.
