Abstract

Gabriel Poole's story about knowledge-development is telling from a number of points of view. It speaks critically of formal education, it defies some of the strictures of traditional contractual arrangements, and it relies heavily on teaching and learning from others. In a reversal of traditional roles, Gabriel Poole claims his makers (steelworkers, carpenters and canvas fabricators) tell him what to do. This claim seems rather implausible coming from an architect of Poole's experience, personality and standing. However there is little doubt that these makers have forged important relationships with this architect and, significantly, that the relationships began during times when Poole was designing and building those buildings for which he is probably best known - the Tent House at Eumundi (Robin Boyd Award for Housing 1991) and the quadropod houses, various in number and scattered throughout southeast Queensland.

Citation countsare sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
