Intraoperative Error During Implantation of the Austin Moore Hemiarthroplasty

Weinrauch, Patrick C. (2006) Intraoperative Error During Implantation of the Austin Moore Hemiarthroplasty. Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, 14(3), pp. 249-252.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Technical inadequacy in implantation of the uncemented unipolar Austin Moore Hemiarthroplasty has been associated with early failure of the prosthesis by aseptic loosening and residual thigh pain requiring revision. This study examines the frequency of technical errors experienced during implantation of the Austin Moore prosthesis in a public hospital. Methods: A Retrospective radiographic and chart review of 147 consecutive uncemented Austin Moore hemiarthoplasties was conducted with particular reference to intraoperative errors associated with early failure of the prosthesis. Results: 48.3% patients had at least 1 error in implantation. Intraoperative fractures were sustained in 14.3%. Registrars and Consultants had equivalent error rates. Conclusions: The results from this study imply the uncemented Austin Moore prosthesis is a technically demanding prosthesis that is difficult to implant well, and greater selectivity should be exercised when considering its use for femoral neck fractures.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.

Full-text downloads displays the total number of times this work’s files (e.g., a PDF) have been downloaded from QUT ePrints as well as the number of downloads in the previous 365 days. The count includes downloads for all files if a work has more than one.
