Abstract

This chapter explores the desires for modernisation and change in the cultural life of China. It examines some key features of the the New Culture Movement, the May Fourth Movement and Communist Party ideology wiith reference to literature and art. Then this chapter focuses on the more philosophical cultural responses to social and cultural change by exploring propaganda and the statements of individuals various political persuasions about religion and morality.
