Abstract

You can't run away from 'search', from 'identity'... I don't think it's a conscious thing .... but there's always that layer that comes out, that sense of search. (Haresh Sharma, 1996:107)

This thesis will examine English language theatre in Singapore and takes as its focus question: what are the important issues and concerns of the Singapore English language theatre as identified by its key practitioners and manifest through their work? Many of these issues are related to identity and language and Singapore's unique arts environment. This content will be examined for its contribution to the culture of Singapore and investigate whether English language theatre reflects and I or fosters national identifications in a rapidly evolving, multilingual, multi-ethnic society.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
