This paper is an account of the development of spectacle lenses and spectacle lens design with emphasis on the principles which have been formulated and accepted. Areas covered are: development of spherical spectacle lens design, aspheric spectacle lenses, spectacle lens materials, present standards and practices regarding adherence to principles, practical assessment of spectacle lenses and their design, and future investigation.
