What makes foundations tick?

Abstract

From the viewpoint of fundraisers the life of the around 11,000 grant-making foundations in the UK may appear carefree. Grant-making foundations 'merely' have to dispense funds rather than raise them, and surely spending money has to be easier than getting it? So, with around £2 billion to spend each year largely as they choose, what could possibly keep foundations awake
at night?

Before attempting to answer that question it is important to distinguish between different types of grant-makers. To fundraisers grant-making foundations may appear to be very much alike but not all foundations are grant-makers - some operate their own programmes - and not all grant-makers are endowed foundations.
