The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering (BEE) external review (2003) mandated recommendations to move forward strategically on a path of renewal and regeneration. The Faculty has become a value-driven organisation with a vision and strategic direction that accords with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Blueprint and external directions.
Consequently, courses offered by the Faculty of BEE have undergone redevelopment in accordance with the University’s quality assurance process. This process is to ensure our courses are up-to-date and industry relevant. These changes offer students exciting new opportunities for a broader interdisciplinary education that will enhance their career prospects and will include options such as practical experience in the workplace (workplace integrated learning units); the opportunity to gain experience in a minor study area (collection of four units from one study area); involvement in cross disciplinary project teams.
In rationalising and prioritising these factors the Faculty of BEE have developed three courses with each course managed by a single course coordinator. These broad courses are Bachelor of Design with four first majors; Bachelor of Engineering with nine first majors; Bachelor of Urban Development with five first majors including Spatial Science (Surveying).
This paper discusses the educational philosophy behind the course structure and pedagogical directions of the new four year Spatial Science program. The education model adopted for the spatial science program includes core areas of measurement science, land management and spatial information management. It also outlines the newly implemented Criteria Referenced Assessment (CRA) policy and the adoption of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) environments into the undergraduate lifelong learning experience.
