Participatory planning for sustainable woodland resource-use in tropical savanna woodlands north Queensland

Thwaites, Robin N., Carter, Jennifer, & Norman, Phillip (2006) Participatory planning for sustainable woodland resource-use in tropical savanna woodlands north Queensland. In Childs, Iraphne R.W. & Hudson, Brian J. (Eds.) Queensland Geographical Perspectives. Royal Geographical Society of Queensland Inc, Brisbane, Qld., pp. 147-168.

The project reported upon here addresses the resource planning issues for the savanna woodlands of tropical northern Queensland under native title on the western margin of Cape York Peninsula.Involving the indigenous community and their decision-making environment proved to be a positive and progressive process. Initiating and maintaining involvement, to promote empowerment and ownership of the process and outcomes, was also the part of the project that required the greatest investment of time and effort. The concept of resource-use planning had previously been seen as an alien imposition upon their community for ‘outsider’ benefits, whereas the participatory approach has shown their ownership of the decisions over the use of their resources for, largely, their community benefit, whilst maintaining a procedure and outcomes acceptable to regional and State administration.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
