Abstract

It may not immediately be obvious why propaganda should feature at all in a collection about 'beautiful things' in popular culture. Unlike most of the other items selected for inclusion in the book, propaganda is typically not chosen or purchased by its consumers; rather it is foisted upon them. Propaganda is hardly 'in' popular culture; or if so it's like a virus – something that infests an environment for its own purposes, which may be harmful to the host organism. And no-one, at least those of us drilled in modern Western democratic-process ideologies, is supposed to like propaganda.
