Past experiments have shown that the microwave curing of epoxies reduces the curing time and has favourable effects on the mechanical properties of the epoxies. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of the microwave curing of epoxies using an Infra-red thermometer as a means of controlling the temperature of the samples during the time when they are subjected to microwave radiation. A precise temperature control strategy is important, as inaccuracy often leads to uncontrolled thermal run-away resulting in the destruction of the material. The proposed control system incorporates a temperature feedback control mechanism to control the temperature and the exposure time of adhesive joints during microwave radiation. Microwave energy at a frequency of 2.45 GHz was used to cure various engineering thermoplastics bonded together using two-part epoxies. The samples were exposed to microwave power inputs of 300, 450 and 600 W in a slotted waveguide. The bond strengths achieved by the microwave-cured samples were then compared to those of samples cured under ambient conditions. The results obtained indicate that the microwave cured samples achieved a higher bond strength and at a fraction of the time needed for ambient curing. The proposed control system was able to provide a precise temperature control strategy for the localised hot spots commonly associated with microwave heating, thereby increasing the efficiency of microwave curing whilst improving the bond strength and the quality of the adhesive joints
