In this, the 10th anniversary of the introduction of silicone hydrogel contact lenses onto the market, it is perhaps timely to attempt to reconcile the apparently disparate results from different authors in relation to the incidence of keratitis with silicone hydrogel lenses and indeed, with contact lenses in general.
In attempting to understand the findings of these various studies, we propose that consideration be given to the competing effects of an improved physiological response due to increased corneal oxygenation with these lenses versus their mechanical impact...
