Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HA) - yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) composites were successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The HA-YSZ composites were fully densified after spark plasma sintering sintering at 1200 oC for 5 minutes. The equiaxial YSZ grains were uniformly dispersed in the HA matrix. The HA-YSZ composites sintered at 1200 degrees Celsius showed microhardness of about 9 GPa, Young’s modulus of up to 160 GPa, and bending strength of 200 MPa, much higher than those of pure HA.
