Graves, Nicholas, Halton, Kate, Curtis, Merrilyn , Doidge, Shane , Lairson, David , McLaws, Mary-Lou, & Whitby, Michael (2006) Costs of Surgical Site Infections That Appear After Hospital Discharge3. Emerging Infectious Diseases, 12(5), pp. 831-834.
Data were collected from surgical patients in hospital and on four occasions post-discharge. The incidence rate of post-discharge surgical-site-infection was 8.46%. There was strong evidence that these infections caused only minor additional costs and this contradicts the existing literature. We discuss why costs might be overstated in previous studies.
