This paper describes an investigation into an open framework for parametric design systems for early design phases. The framework supports the insertion of new modular parametric design components, offering new parametric design solutions. These parametric design components contain user interfaces for the insertion of new parameters. In addition, these components contain implementations for generating new design solutions. To make sure that the level of difficulty for inserting new components does not increase exponentially with the amount of components, independency of the components is investigated. To enable multiple parametric design components to work on the same design, an explicit formalisation of the objects of interest (often called an ontology) has been used. This paper describes the framework and a prototype parametric design system.
