The purpose of this study was to compare two models of the relationship between personality and Motivation to Lead. The first model, originally developed by Chan and Drasgow (2001), is based on a traditional view of personality and regards traits as independent. The second model is based on more recent, sociobiological theories of personality, and as such regards traits as being inter-related and occurring at both distal and proximal levels of causation. Four hundred and forty-two part time workers participated in this study, which involved completing a number of online questionnaires. The competing models were assessed using structural equation modelling, and fit was compared using a Chi2 difference test. As hypothesised, support was found for the second model. Findings have implications both from a theoretical personality perspective and also from an applied leadership development perspective.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
