Abstract

This report discusses current provision and potential future developments for professional level training in dance in Ireland. While, over the years, there have been a number of positive initiatives to support training possibilities for students outside of the country and to help these students reconnect with dance networks in Ireland, there has not been a focused initiative to establish a professional training programme with the institutional support required to compete at an international level. Therefore, for dancers in Ireland, the decision to follow a career in dance means that they must travel abroad to receive professional level training at an established dance conservatory. This gap in education is anomalous among developed countries and has had a negative impact on the development of the art form more generally. Taking into account the background and historical context outlined above, the aim of this report, therefore, is to inform and help advance pathways for professional dance training in Ireland as well as broader Arts Council policy in the area.
