Abstract

Most assumptions underpinning research and practice related to learning environments have emerged from models derived from the discipline of psychology. However, as we learn more about human learning, the competencies required to successfully engage with a contingent and dynamic learning culture, the nature of knowledge and the influence of the cultural background of learners, the need for alternative models for conceptualising learning environments, emerges. While early research on learning environments has furthered our general understanding of individual’s affective and cognitive needs and provided coherent models that can be adapted for teaching, it is insufficient to explain the dynamic and temporal nature of learning culture which incorporates both the socio-cultural and contextual aspects of human learning and the pragmatic action necessary to engage with sustained and diverse learning approaches. This paper challenges the current ‘best practice’ approach to understanding learning interactivity and engagement in new and complex learning environments by theorising on the interactive nature of individuals’ motives and strategies with the learning agency and ‘intelligence’ inherent in the learning environment. The speculations are supported by data collected in a 3-year longitudinal study of learning in a complex tertiary environment.
