Abstract

As the competition between State, Private and Independently governed schools intensifies, school administrations are responding by implementing program that highlight various areas of specialization.

From the field of Sport, and the Key Learning Area of Health and Physical Education, the innovation of ‘Schools of Excellence’ (SOE) in sport has taken a pre-eminent position in the marketing programs of many of Queensland’s Secondary Schools. The SOE’s - often amalgamated with recognized sporting organization, Institutions of Higher Learning and or community based industry, are designed to provide specialized programs to outstanding students.

Since Kelvin Grove State College breathed life into the first SOE (Tennis) program in the country in 1984, the number of SOE programs has increased formidably. There are now 28 individual SOE in sport programs offered by State Secondary Schools in the Brisbane geographical area alone – an alarming figure considering the enthusiasm with which Private and Independent Schools have embraced the innovation of SOE in sporting programs.

The purpose of this research is to report the early findings from a seeding project that used qualitative methodology to examine the foundations that have enabled one Private Secondary School to gain national recognition from the SOE initiative.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.

Full-text downloads:

Full-text downloads displays the total number of times this work’s files (e.g., a PDF) have been downloaded from QUT ePrints as well as the number of downloads in the previous 365 days. The count includes downloads for all files if a work has more than one.
