Abstract

The need for authentic learning that is related to the real-world experiences by strategic alignment of learning objectives to authentic tasks has been encouraged in higher education settings. MOSAIQ(v2.6) oncology information system (OIS); (IMPAC Medical Systems, Sunnyvale, CA) is currently in use to support undergraduate radiation therapist training at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). A pre-implementation analysis of the system's capabilities in addressing radiation therapy clinical competencies was conducted.

Essential to the role of the Radiation therapist is the need to apply effective training methods at undergraduate level, driven by the current clinical needs. There is compelling evidence from literature to support constructive alignment with several clinical competencies. Implementing such technology as a pedagogical tool can ensure graduates have well defined skills in various areas of practice to enable quality outcomes in radiotherapy. Such work integrated learning (WIL) approach to curriculum design has been endorsed by contemporary studies in the academia. A strategic alignment with existing treatment planning and virtual technologies to key learning outcomes is expected to make a substantial contribution to the development of meaningful students’ outcomes.

The increased knowledge and hands-on skills at undergraduate levels in areas such as image matching and quality assurance can be powerful tools to drive the issues of quality and safety in radiation therapy practice a step further. Further research is required to evaluate its impact on student learning and transferability of skills amongst other potential benefits and challenges.
