Looking deeper into the trait-leadership relationship: Character mediates temperament in the prediction of leadership effectiveness

O'Connor, Peter J. (2010) Looking deeper into the trait-leadership relationship: Character mediates temperament in the prediction of leadership effectiveness. In 9th Australian Conference on Personality and Individual Differences (ACPID), 26-27 November 2010, Wollongong, N.S.W. (Unpublished)

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to test a structural model of trait-based variance in leadership effectiveness. The model suggests that individual differences in leadership effectiveness are partially due to biologically based dimensions of personality, partially due to cognitively based dimensions of personality and partially due to the moderated effects biological dimensions have on cognitive dimensions. The proposed model was tested using a large sample of workers from several organisations in Australia. Results were consistent with the suggestion that biologically based dimensions of personality are both distal predictors and proximal moderators of leadership effectiveness. Cognitive dimensions were found to be proximal predictors (mediators) of Leadership Effectiveness. The importance of modelling trait based variance is discussed, and specific examples are given to demonstrate why modelling such variance (i.e. focussing on conditional, indirect and conditional indirect effects rather than just direct effects) is theoretically and practically worthwhile.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.

Full-text downloads:

1 in the past twelve months

Full-text downloads displays the total number of times this work’s files (e.g., a PDF) have been downloaded from QUT ePrints as well as the number of downloads in the previous 365 days. The count includes downloads for all files if a work has more than one.
