Abstract

The Pacific has an abundance of places with special cultural and historical significance to the local people, the nation, the rcgion and the widcr world. Yet many sites are not protected by legislation, do not have management plans, are in poor repair arid arc often unknown to other Pacific Islanders. This paper argucs that a curriculum based on cultural sites will initiate community, national and world awareness of the lcgacics of the past and dcvelop in young adults a spirit of community action to conserve and prcscrvc thcsc spccial places, and equip them with a set of skills so thcy access knowledge about their own cultural heritage.
