Abstract

Abstract only: A central theme of this volume is that learning with understanding occurs when problems are posed that are just within students’ reach, allowing them to struggle to find solutions. If we are to provide worthwhile problem-solving experiences for ALL students in the classroom, we must pay particular attention to the needs of exceptional students. These students include those with learning difficulties and those who are gifted in mathematics. In order to achieve this goal, we need to understand the characteristics of exceptional students and employ strategies that will engage them productively in problem-solving tasks.
