Abstract
The estimation of peak discharge due to rainfall-runoff is a fundamental part of the design of hydraulic structures in small catchments. Models such as WBNM, RORB and RAFTS are generally used as deterministic models of the processes taking place during individual rainfall-runoff events. A more direct statistical approach is often adopted in small catchments, in which a statistical model of the catchment such as the Rational Method, is used to link the statistical rainfall relationship at the site with a statistically based runoff relationship. This paper describes a design procedure in which distributed storage rainfall-runoff models can be effectively incorporated within the statistical modelling approach, using a fully advanced storm pattern. With the adoption of a suitable proportional loss rate and storage discharge coefficient, the procedure becomes a suitable model for linking the statistical rainfall relationship at a site with the statistical runoff relationship. The procedure has been tested on 47 small gauged catchments in Queensland.
