Abstract
The Deception Bay Life Long Learning Project has been conducted between 28 July 2003 to 14th November 2003 with the purpose to gather information on the learning needs of the community enabling them to potential participate in education, training and recreational activities. The survey (Stage 1) of the project, has been conducted by local people and has represented an important means of stimulating awareness and interest in the learning opportunities, which will be available through the implementation phase (Stage 2). In particular, project outcomes have been identified to provide Stage 2 with information that will enable: • Life for learning; • Gain new skills, contacts and confidence leading to personal development; • Actively encourage and support learning by their children; and • Provide pathways leading to further training or job outcomes at a later stage. The project aims to support changed attitudes about learning to cater for individuals at various stages on the learning continuum. Its objectives are to assist in providing pathways for participants for a range of purposes, which may include enriching individual lives, engaging with other members or groups within the community, or progressing towards further training or employment at a later stage. In tangible terms the project is designed to deliver: • Listings of existing and planned learning activities from all community sources; • A database of existing skills amongst the residents who are willing to share their skills as a tutor/mentor under the project; • A database of learning /training preferences among residents; • Employment and training of eight (8) Deception Bay residents for up to 16 weeks under Stage 1; • A diverse range of non-accredited and informal learning activities in Deception Bay, to be determined by the community survey, which will complement activities existing or planned by agencies/community organisations; and • A monthly community directory of all education, recreation and training activities in Deception Bay.
