Abstract

Organoclays were obtained by the cationic exchange of mono, di and tri alkyl chain surfactants [hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMAB0), dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDOAB), ethyltrioctadecylammonium bromide (MTOAB)] for sodium ions in an aqueous solution with Na-montmorillonite. The characterization of organoclays with and without adsorbed paranitrophenol was determined by X-ray diffraction, TEM and thermal analysis. Differences in the surfaces and in the interlayer of the mono, di and tri alkyl chain organoclays resulted in differences in the adsorption efficiency for paranitrophenol with tri > di > mono >> Na-Mt.
