Abstract
An analysis of the Australian Referendum Study, 1999, conducted a few months after the republic referendum, shows that • the proposed republic was rejected because the majority of voters wanted a republic with a directly elected President; and that • this preference was particularly strong among those who self-identified as supporters of the more conservative parties. While these people contained many monarchists they contained even more ‘direct electionists’ and hardly any supporters of the republic proposed in 1999, where politicians would choose the President.
