Abstract

Few textbooks on Australain public administration provide an historial context, but Caiden's two early studies Career Service (1965) and The Commonwealth Bureaucracy (1967) are exceptions. He accepted the premise that the historiography of administrative history could not be understood if not explicitly linked to the political, social and economic environment in which it occurs.
