Abstract
The article, published after the resignation of Governor-General Hollingworth, discussed the assumed power of the Prime Minister to decide, by himself, who the next Governor-General would be, and argued that (i) the convention of responsible government, as developed in the 19th century, dictated that major decisions such as this should be made by the Cabinet collectively, not by one man, and that (ii) the monarchical language of our Constitution ("executive power is vested in the Queen") encourages people to think in terms of one-man rule rather than in terms of a broader and more democratic distribution of power.
