Abstract

About time, along with long overdue and terrific are just some of the words we use to describe the work contained within Aileen Moreton-Robinson's book 'Talkin' Up to the White Woman'. Pamela Croft stated on reading Moreton-Robinson's book that she "was overwhelmed by her strength of voice". In our review we outline that Moreton-Robinson has without doubt given us and lots of women words to describe the feelings that for a long time have been held deep within us about the Australian women’s movement and feminism. Words for the mixed up feelings of uneasiness, unsureness, the sort of uncomfortable but soft feelings, the no ways, along with the yeses, and the affirmations and agreement on some issues. It has been hard to find some theory or conceptual analysis that describes and gives a context to what we have been feeling and thinking. Moreton-Robinson provides this in her book. She places the results of her findings within the public domain offering an articulation of the intersections between race, gender, class, whiteness and history within Australian feminism. We believe that some people will find her work provocative and challenging. We reached the conlusion undertaking this book review that Aileen Moreton-Robinson's Talkin' Up to the White Woman is extremely timely, an important contribution and too deadly!
