Research Background

Vermilion Records, the student-run record label at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, has achieved a significant milestone in its seventh year of operation with the release of its first physical vinyl compilation, "Vermilion Records Volume 1." This groundbreaking initiative represents a strategic evolution from purely digital distribution to tangible, collectible physical media, demonstrating the label's commitment to preserving traditional music formats while maintaining its innovative educational approach.

The vinyl release, launched in November 2024 through a partnership with Brisbane's first pressing plant Suitcase Records, showcases nine emerging artists across two distinct sonic experiences: Side A featuring acoustic, intimate performances from Samichoux, Georgia Scarlett, milliepede, Ollie Schwerin, and deni, while Side B presents amplified, high-energy tracks from FevaDreams, KAMI, The Graveyard Club, and strayfold. This dual-sided approach reflects the student label's understanding of music as both intimate artistic expression and communal cultural experience.

The project represents a significant expansion of the interdisciplinary learning model that has sustained Vermilion Records, engaging students across music production, visual design, marketing, event management, and business development. Under the executive production of Associate Professor Kristina Kelman, students gained hands-on experience in vinyl production processes, from mastering by Dr Yanto Browning to pressing, packaging, and distribution. The initiative culminated in a live launch event at Ric's Bar in Fortitude Valley and a campus record fair, demonstrating the integration of physical product development with experiential marketing and community engagement.

Research Contribution

This practice-led research extends the existing literature on music education, physical media revival, and entrepreneurial learning in several significant ways. Building upon Evpak's (2022) work on digital music record labels in university settings, this study demonstrates how educational music initiatives can successfully bridge digital and analog domains, creating learning opportunities that encompass both contemporary streaming strategies and traditional physical media production. The deliberate structuring of the vinyl as a cohesive listening experience—rather than a collection of individual tracks—reflects contemporary discourse about album-as-art-object and challenges streaming culture's emphasis on single-track consumption.

Research Significance

The significance of this research lies in its demonstration of how educational music initiatives can successfully engage with physical media production while maintaining pedagogical value and commercial viability. As the music industry experiences continued growth in vinyl sales, this study provides a model for how university-based record labels can participate in and contribute to this renaissance while offering students comprehensive industry experience.

The research highlights the importance of mentorship and industry partnership in creative education, showing how collaboration with established producers and pressing facilities can enhance learning outcomes without compromising the student-led nature of the initiative. The successful integration of traditional vinyl production with contemporary marketing and distribution strategies offers valuable insights for other educational institutions seeking to develop relevant, industry-connected music programs.

By documenting the process of creating physical media as "a tangible, living physical piece rather than something just streamed," the research contributes to ongoing discussions about the value and future of physical music formats in digital culture. The project's emphasis on locality—featuring Brisbane artists and utilising Brisbane's first pressing plant—demonstrates how educational initiatives can strengthen local music ecosystems while providing students with authentic industry experience.
