Australia’s antibiotic consumption is above the OECD average. However, it is unclear which factors are most important for driving antibiotic use in Australian primary healthcare. This research established the most important factors influencing general practitioners to prescribe antibiotics and consumers to use antibiotics. In addition, a model was developed — the Enabling Antibiotic Eupraxis (EABE) model — to explain the drivers of antibiotic use from three perspectives: general practitioners, community pharmacists and consumers. This evidence informs the implementation of Australia’s national antimicrobial resistance strategy.
