?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Mechanical+properties+of+thin+sol-gel+films&rft.creator=J%C3%A4mting%2C+A%CC%8Asa&rft.subject=Thin+films+Mechanical+properties&rft.subject=Colloids&rft.subject=mechanical+properties&rft.subject=thin+films&rft.subject=sol-gel+deposition&rft.subject=bi-axial+bending&rft.subject=ultra+micro+indentation&rft.subject=ion+implementation&rft.subject=thesis&rft.subject=doctoral&rft.description=This+thesis+presents+a+study+of+the+mechanical+properties+of+thin+films.+The+main+aim+was+to+determine+the+properties+of+sol-gel+derived+coatings.+These+films+are+used+in+a+range+of+different+applications+and+are+known+to+be+quite+porous.+Very+little+work+has+been+carried+out+in+this+area+and+in+order+to+study+the+mechanical+properties+of+sol-gel+films%2C+some+of+the+work+was+carried+out+on+magnetron+sputtered+metal+coatings+in+order+to+validate+the+techniques+developed+in+this+work.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe+main+part+of+the+work+has+concentrated+on+the+development+of+various+bending+techniques+to+study+the+elastic+modulus+of+the+thin+films%2C+including+both+a+small+scale+three-point+bending%2C+as+well+as+a+novel+bi-axial+bending+technique+based+on+a+disk+resting+on+three+supporting+balls.+The+bending+techniques+involve+a+load+being+applied+to+the+sample+being+tested+and+the+bending+response+to+this+force+being+recorded.+These+experiments+were+carried+out+using+an+ultra+micro+indentation+system+with+very+sensitive+force+and+depth+recording+capabilities.+By+analysing+the+result+of+these+forces+and+deflections+using+existing+theories+of+elasticity%2C+the+elastic+modulus+may+be+determined.+In+addition+to+the+bi-axial+bending+study%2C+a+finite+element+analysis+of+the+stress+distribution+in+a+disk+during+bending+was+carried+out.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe+results+from+the+bi-axial+bending+tests+of+the+magnetron+sputtered+films+was+confirmed+by+ultra+micro+indentation+tests%2C+giving+information+of+the+hardness+and+elastic+modulus+of+the+films.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt+was+found+that+while+the+three+point+bending+method+gave+acceptable+results+for+uncoated+steel+substrates%2C+it+was+very+susceptible+to+slight+deformations+of+the+substrate.+Improvements+were+made+by+more+careful+preparation+of+the+substrates+in+order+to+avoid+deformation.+However+the+technique+still+failed+to+give+reasonable+results+for+coated+specimens.+In+contrast%2C+biaxial+bending+gave+very+reliable+results+even+for+very+thin+films+and+this+technique+was+also+found+to+be+useful+for+determination+of+the+properties+of+sol-gel+coatings.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn+addition%2C+an+ultra+micro+indentation+study+of+the+hardness+and+elastic+modulus+of+sol-gel+films+was+conducted.+This+study+included+conventionally+fired+films+as+well+as+films+ion+implanted+in+a+range+of+doses.+The+indentation+tests+showed+that+for+implantation+of+H%3Csup%3E%2B%3C%2Fsup%3E+ions+at+doses+exceeding+3x10%3Csup%3E16%3C%2Fsup%3E+ions%2Fcm%3Csup%3E2%3C%2Fsup%3E%2C+the+mechanical+properties+closely+resembled+those+of+films+that+were+conventionally+fired+to+450%C2%B0C.&rft.publisher=Queensland+University+of+Technology&rft.date=1999&rft.type=Thesis&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.relation=https%3A%2F%2Feprints.qut.edu.au%2F36085%2F6%2FA%25CC%258Asa%2520J%25C3%25A4mting_Digitised%2520Thesis.pdf&rft.rights=free_to_read&rft.relation=J%C3%A4mting%2C+A%CC%8Asa+(1999)+Mechanical+properties+of+thin+sol-gel+films.+PhD+thesis%2C+Queensland+University+of+Technology.&rft.id_number=https%3A%2F%2Feprints.qut.edu.au%2F36085%2F&rft.rights=Copyright+A%CC%8Asa+J%C3%A4mting
