?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Re-examining+educational+risk+prediction%3A+The+development+of+a+parent+screening+inventory+for+children+with+learning+difficulties+at+school+entry&rft.creator=Reddington%2C+John&rft.subject=Learning+disabled+children+Psychological+testing&rft.subject=Developmentally+disabled+children+Psychological+testing&rft.subject=Behavioral+assessment+of+children&rft.subject=Child+development+Testing&rft.subject=Educational+tests+and+measurements&rft.subject=learning+difficulties+(LD)&rft.subject=definition&rft.subject=behaviour+problems&rft.subject=developmental+deficit&rft.subject=genetic&rft.subject=pre-&rft.subject=peri-&rft.subject=post-natal&rft.subject=socioeconomic+status&rft.subject=afamily+adversity&rft.subject=heterogeneity&rft.subject=continuum&rft.subject=sub-areas&rft.subject=item+clusters&rft.subject=educational+risk+prediction&rft.subject=risk+change+over+time&rft.subject=screening&rft.subject=child+based&rft.subject=teacher+based&rft.subject=parent+based&rft.subject=feasibility&rft.subject=reliability&rft.subject=validity+(content%2C+construct%2C+criterion)&rft.subject=hit+rate&rft.subject=sensitivity&rft.subject=specificity&rft.subject=overreferral&rft.subject=underreferral&rft.subject=conditional+probability&rft.subject=odds+ratio&rft.subject=continuous+assessment&rft.subject=clinical+evaluation&rft.subject=cross-evaluation&rft.subject=thesis&rft.subject=doctoral&rft.description=A+parent+screening+instrument+for+learning+difficulties+(PSILD)+was+investigated+clinically+over+three+years+with+children+referred+for+learning+and+behaviour+problems.+This+established+face+validity+for+an+instrument+with+eight+sub-areas+(i)+SocioDemographic%2C+(ii)+Genetic%2C+(iii)+Pregnancy%2C+(iv)+Birth%2C+(v)+Early+Illness%2C+(vi)+SpeechLanguage%2C+(vii)+Movement%2C+(viii)+Behaviour+(Withdrawal+-+Social+Competence%2C+Anxiety-Depression%2C+Conduct-Oppositional+Disorder%2C+Hyperactivity%2C+Attention).+To+these+were+added+the+sub-areas+of+Early+Education+and+Social+Strength+(resilience).+PSILD+was+then+trialled+at+school+entry+for+usability%2C+acceptability%2C+cost+effectiveness%2C+and+ease+of+administration+by+school+personnel%2C+in+one+private+primary+school%2C+two+state+schools+from+low+socio-economic+areas%2C+and+a+child+health+clinic.+The+clinic+results+showed+a+higher+incidence+of+problems%2C+providing+further+face+validity.+Usability%2C+acceptability%2C+cost+effectiveness+and+ease+of+administration+were+seen+to+be+satisfactory.+Parent+feedback+led+to+deletions+and+modifications+of+the+items+and+an+A3+form+was+found+to+be+quicker+and+easier+to+complete+than+an+A4+form.+A+brief+introductory+letter+to+parents+was+also+seen+to+help+completion+of+the+instrument.+A+computer-scored+Feedback+Sheet+was+constructed+providing+teachers+with+an+overall+risk+level+(1+-+9+scale%3B+1+%3Dhigh+risk%3B+9+%3Dno+risk)+and+sub-area+risk+levels+(1+-+3+scale%3B+risk%2C+borderline%2C+no+risk).+This+laid+the+basis+for+the+early+identification+of+academic+problems%2C+besides+remedial+procedures+and+professional+referrals.%0D%0A%0D%0APSILD%2C+based+on+305+items%2C+was+then+completed+by+422+parents+and+factor+analysed+by+sub-area.+The+factors+obtained+were+found+to+logically+define+the+previously+trialled+PSILD+sub-areas%2C+providing+construct+validity.+Items+with+a+loading+ofless+than+.3%2C+were+eliminated%2C+reducing+the+total+from+305+to+202+which+enhanced+content+validity.+Items+were+also+eliminated+which+did+not+contribute+to+the+Cronbach+Alpha+coefficient+per+sub-area.+The+resultant+170+items+gave+an+average+time+of+completion+of+12.7+minutes.+The+overall+Alpha+coefficient+(internal+consistency)+was+.83+(.8295)+(N+%3D+215).+Test-retest+stability+after+a+median+period+of+127+days+was+also+.83+(.8329)+(N+%3D+81+).+Both+these+measures+showed+PSILD+to+have+a+high+level+of+reliability.%0D%0A%0D%0AEmploying+215+children+from+six+schools%2C+a+teacher+instrument%2C+the+Pupil+Rating+Scale+Revised+(PRSR)+and+the+Letter+Identification+Test+(CLAY)%2C+given+after+nine+months+of+schooling%2C+were+used+as+predictive+instruments+with+PSILD+and+chronological+age%2C+against+the+Wechsler+Individual+Achievement+Test+(Reading+Sub-Test)+(WIAT)%2C+given+21+months+after+school+entry.+PSILD+was+found+to+have+a+modest+but+significant+correlation+with+WIAT+(r+%3D+.34).+When+PSILD+was+reduced+to+five+components+(SUBPSILD)+(Genetic%2C+Pregnancy%2C+Withdrawal%2C+Early+Education+and+parents'+educational+level)%2C+the+level+rose+tor%3D+.44.+The+PRSR+and+CLAY+levels+were+.45+and+.51+respectively.+When+SUBPSILD+was+combined+with+Auditory+Comprehension+and+Memory+(PRSRAUD)%2C+CLAY+and+age%2C+multiple+R+reached+.76+(variance+57+percent).+Entering+these+components+into+a+discriminant+function+analysis+produced+a+hit+rate+of+91.2+percent+and+an+odds+ratio+of+12.6+(12+%3C+.0001).+This+result+was+superior+to+those+of+seven+recent+studies+which+also+used+multiple+measures+(Scarborough%2C+1998).+SUBPSILD'
