?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Cultural+factors+affecting+tertiary+education+access+for+Bundjalung+men&rft.creator=Phillips%2C+Todd&rft.subject=Bundjalung%2C+Bundjalung+Jugun+(Bundjalung+country%2Fnation)%2C+Bundjalung+Yanha+(bundjalung+way%2Flearning)%2C+Deadly%2C+Fella%2C+Gammin%2C+Gumbaynggir%2C+Indigenist%2C+Indigenous%2C+Indigenous+knowledges%2C+Indigenous+standpoint+theory%2C+Jarjums%2C+Koori%2C+Mob%2C+Murri%2C+Tribe&rft.subject=Widjabul%2C+Yaegl%2C+Yarn%2C+Yarning%2C+Yugem&rft.description=Despite+documented+changes+to+mainstream+educational+systems%2C+Indigenous+educational+achievements+are+still+at+critically+low+levels+across+all+phases+of+formal+education.+According+to+the+Australian+Bureau+of+Statistics+(2011)+Indigenous+students+are+still+less+likely+than+non-Indigenous+students+to+complete+their+final+years+of+schooling+(45%25+compared+with+77%25+in+2009)%3B+tertiary+level+entry+and+outcomes+are+also+significantly+lower+than+non-Indigenous+entry+and+outcomes.%0D%0A%0D%0AAlthough+significant+research+has+focused+on+the+area+of+Indigenous+education%2C+in+particular%2C+identifying+and+making+recommendations+on+how+to+close+educational+gaps+between+Indigenous+and+non-Indigenous+people%2C+these+studies+have+failed+to+bring+about+the+change+needed+and+to+engage+successfully+with+Indigenous+communities+and+draw+on+Indigenous+communities%E2%80%99+insights+for+best+practice.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis+thesis+focuses+on+Indigenous+perspectives+and+takes+a+closer+look+at+the+cultural+factors+that+impact+on+tertiary+education+access+for+Indigenous+young+men+who+come+from+a+Bundjalung+community+on+the+far+north+coast+of+northern+New+South+Wales.+To+date%2C+this+community+has+not+been+the+focus+of+serious+postgraduate+study.+Their+experiences+and+the+values+and+ideas+of+their+community+have+not+been+investigated.%0D%0A%0D%0ATo+do+this%2C+the+study+uses+an+Indigenous+methodological+framework.+It+draws+on+Indigenous+Standpoint+Theory+to+analyse+data+through+concepts+of+the+cultural+interface+and+tensions+(Nakata%2C+2007%2C+pp.+195-217).+The+study%E2%80%99s+framing+also+draws+on+decolonising+methods+(Porsanger%2C+2004%3B+Smith%2C+1999)+and+Indigenist+research+methods+(Rigney%2C+1997).+Such+methodologies+are+intended+to+benefit+both+the+research+participants+(community+members)+and+the+researcher.+In+doing+so%2C+the+study+draws+on+Creswell%E2%80%99s+(2008)+methods+of+restorying+and+retelling+to+analyse+the+participants%E2%80%99+interviews+and+yarns+about+their+lives+and+experiences+relating+to+tertiary+educational+access.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe+research+process+occurred+in+multiple+stages%3A+(1)+selection+of+research+sites%2C+(2)+granting+of+access+which+was+requested+through+consultation+with+local+Aboriginal+Elders+and+through+the+local+Aboriginal+Lands+Council%2C+(3)+conducting+of+interviews+with+participants%2F+data+collection%2C+(4)+analysis+of+data%2C+(5)+documentation+of+findings%2C+(6)+theory+development%2C+and+(7)+reporting+back+to+the+nominated+Indigenous+community+on+the+progress+and+findings+of+the+research.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe+benefits+of+this+research+are+numerous.+First%2C+this+study+addresses+an+issue+that+has+been+identified+from+within+the+local+Aboriginal+community+as+an+issue+of+high+precedence%2C+looking+at+the+cultural+factors+surrounding+the+underrepresentation+of+Indigenous+people+accessing+tertiary+education.+This+is+not+only+of+local+significance+but+has+been+identified+in+the+literature+as+a+local%2C+national+and+international+area+of+concern+amongst+Indigenous+peoples+(Department+of+Economic+and+Social+Affairs%2C+2009%3B+Herbert%2C+2010%3B+King%2C+2011).+Secondly%2C+the+study+draws+on+local+Indigenous+knowledges+and+learning+processes+from+within+a+Bundjalung+community+to+gain+inside+perspectives%2C+namely+the+cultural+factors+that+are+being+expressed+from+a+range+of+Indigenous+community+members+%E2%80%93+young+men%2C+community+Elders+and+community+members+%E2%80%93+and+finding+out+what+they+perceive+inhibit+and%2For+promote+tertiary+education+participation+within+their+community.+Such+perspectives+are+rarely+heard.%0D%0A%0D%0AFinally%2C+recommendations+made+from+this+study+are+aimed+at+revealing+investigative+styles+that+may+be+utilised+by+Western+institutions+to+improve+access+for+Indigenous+young+men+living+in+the+Narlumdarlum1+region+in+the+tertiary+context.&rft.publisher=Queensland+University+of+Technology&rft.date=2012&rft.type=Thesis&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.relation=https%3A%2F%2Feprints.qut.edu.au%2F54626%2F1%2FTodd_Phillips_Thesis.pdf&rft.rights=free_to_read&rft.relation=Phillips%2C+Todd+(2012)+Cultural+factors+affecting+tertiary+education+access+for+Bundjalung+men.+Masters+by+Research+thesis%2C+Queensland+University+of+Technology.&rft.id_number=https%3A%2F%2Feprints.qut.edu.au%2F54626%2F&rft.identifier=Faculty+of+Education%3B+Office+of+Education+Research
