Description

This chapter explores online education and its evolution in Australia to date. It is structured into four main parts with a specific focus on both undergraduate and postgraduate higher education. First, we provide a brief historical overview of online education in Australia while positioning Australia within the global higher education landscape. Within this section, student demographics are identified, as are current practices and possibilities, with a particular focus on the impact of COVID-19 and how this has accelerated online education developments and created an urgency across the higher education sector. We then discuss the quality assurance of online education and the changing demographics of students accessing online education. Here, the development of digital literacy, fluency, and capabilities as well as other trends, opportunities, and challenges are explored. Finally, the chapter discusses the impact of recent market demands, government agendas, and institutional priorities in Australia.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
